OCULAR THERAPEUTICS & TRIAGE

Women Using Eye Drops

Professor Simon Barnard is registered with the General Optical Council as an Independent Prescriber. He holds certificates in Ocular Therapeutics from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, USA, Ocular Therapeutics and Prescribing from City University, London and the Diploma in Independent Prescribing DipTh(IP) from the College of Optometrists, UK.

Professor Barnard is licensed to treat and manage a wide range of ocular disease following the clinical management guidelines of the College of Optometrists. This enables patients easy local access to diagnosis, and where applicable, treatment with both topical and oral medications.

Dry eye management is a speciality of the practice and is administered by all of the Optometrists. Sophisticated treatment includes Blephex treatment for blepharitis, LipiFlow for meibomian gland dysfunction and punctum plugs for aqueous deficiency.

Professor Barnard and Dr Levit work closely with consultant ophthalmologists and will refer patients with more serious eye conditions.

LipiFlow Treatment with LipiView

The TearScience LipiView system is a sophisticated device to enable the diagnosis of dry eye caused by Meibomian Gland Deficiency (MGD). Patients with dry eye caused by MGD can be treated with a range of therapies including hot compresses to the eye lids  with local antibiotics and oral antibiotics. However many patients do not obtain relief from these therapies and we then suggest treatment with LipiFlow.

Lipiflow

LipiFlow is a revolutionary treatment for those suffering from dry eyes and we here at Barnard Levit are delighted to be London's only clinic offering this service to our patients and just the fourth in the United Kingdom.

There are two forms of dry eye disease and you need to make sure that you are treating the right one and we will help you diagnose the right treatment for you, following a consultation.

Our LipiFlow treatment gets to the root cause of dry eyes, blocked Meibomian glands, and helps to eradicate the problem entirely. The treatment will involve applying controlled heat to your inner eyelid with adaptive pressure which, in turn, will encourage your eyes to produce the lipids required for tears.

BlephEx Treatment For Blepharitis

BlephEx is an in-practice procedure performed directly by your eye care provider. Doctors can take an active role in treating blepharitis instead of simply relying on the patient's ability to perform semi-effective home lid scrubs.

With BlephEx, your optometrist thoroughly and precisely eliminates scurf and bacterial debris, the main cause of inflammatory lid disease.

Common Symptoms of Blepharitis:

  • Itching or scratchy eyes

  • Foreign body sensation

  • Tearing

  • Crusting

  • Redness/Inflammation

  • Mattering

  • Dry eyes

  • Eye Rubbing

The treatment is well tolerated with most patients only experiencing a tickling sensation of the lids and lashes.
